Landscape and Gardening Tips for March

What our Pro’s are doing:

Hawks Landscape Designers and Installation Crews:

  • Our landscape crews will begin work on the projects that our designers created last fall and this winter.
  • Our landscape designers will be filling up the rest of our spring schedule with exciting projects around southeastern Wisconsin.

Hawks Landscape Maintenance staff

  • Our lawn care crews will begin applying the first application of our 5-Step Lawn Fertilization Program.  This step, including a pre-emergent to control crab grass, establishes the foundation for a healthy, vigorous lawn throughout the year.  This can be done anytime the soil is thawed from the end of March until the first weekend in May.
  • Our Arborists will be spraying fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs with dormant oil and lime sulfur spray when temperatures remain above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for over 24 hours.  Dormant sprays help control fungal and insect infestations during the growing season.
  • They will also start to fertilize trees, shrubs, and perennial beds when the ground is thawed. ·      Soon they will begin pruning summer/fall blooming shrubs.  Pruning spring flowering shrubs will reduce spring display, but if the plants are overgrown it may be better to sacrifice some flowering this season to improve the health of the plant for upcoming years. Click here for a link to our pruning guide: HAWKS PRUNING GUIDE [link].
  • Our plant bed maintenance crews will be out cutting back and removing stems and old flower/seed heads that were left on perennials and ornamental grasses for winter interest.
  •  The will begin removing evergreen boughs from shrubs and ground cover beds at end of month.
  • They will rake out turf as necessary to remove snow mold, and damage from voles and mice.

You should:

  • Search your yard for gypsy moth eggs and egg masses from Tent Caterpillar and destroy them. Visit the UW-Extension website for more information on Gypsy Moth and Tent Caterpillar in Wisconsin. http://hort.uwex.edu/articles/gypsy-mothhttp://hort.uwex.edu/articles/webworms ·
  • Start begonia, caladium, and calla lily bulbs inside for early bloom.  Seed slow growing flowers and vegetables inside now for earlier flowering and fruit production.

Please note: The timing on many of these tips is approximate and can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors.  If you have any questions, please contact a Hawks Landscape Designer or Maintenance representative at 414-258-5525.
