Plant Tips for March

Start Begonia, Caladium, and Calla Lily bulbs inside for early bloom. Seed slow growing flowers and vegetables inside now for earlier flowering and fruit production.

Check to make sure rodent protection around trees and shrubs is still in place

Do dormant pruning of deciduous trees and summer/fall blooming shrubs this month before the buds open. Now is also a good time to do renewal pruning on old shrubs.

Spray fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs with dormant oil and lime sulphur spray when temperatures remain above 40 degrees F for over 24 hours. Dormant sprays help to control fungal and insect infestations that have overwintered on plants..

Fertilize trees, shrubs, and perennial beds when the ground is thawed.

Remove evergreen boughs from ground cover and perennials beds at end of month.

Strengthen and invigorate your lawn by having Hawks apply the first application of our 5 step lawn program. This can be done any time the soil is thawed from the end of March until the first weekend in May.

Rake out turf as necessary to help reduce remove snow mold damage.

Cut back and remove stems and old flower/seed heads that were left on perennials and ornamental grasses over winter.
